Hokandara Drug Rehab Centre - Visit

Submitted by Anonymous on Thu, 2005-06-02 08:38.
I had the opportunity to visit the Hokandara work centre, which also functions as a drug rehabilitation centre this morning.
My heart jumped the moment I stepped into that place. The joy of the Lord was so evident, there was a different air. Alongside every boundary of the centre were the houses of drug barons and local gang-leaders. The work in Hokandara was recently taken over by a young couple, Rukmal & Anne, along with their two infant children. From the worlds perspective, it might seem almost reckless to put such a young family amidst such dangerous and criminal activity. However, as they soon found out, the Lord had other plans. It seems to be that such a stable family life is what attracts most of the young people of the area to give up their heroin addictions and literally throw themselves at the door of the ministry asking to be set free.
It was an unexpected visit and as a result, I didn't have my camera with me. I plan to visit there again soon (next week) with Sharini and the kids, and promise to grab some photos.
This mornings visit also led to several ministry opportunities for me, which was totally unexpected. More in another post tonight. Till then, thank you for all your prayers and support for us. Please continue to keep us in prayer as God keeps opening more and more doors for us!!

Uptil recently, I held the view that when God gave a prophecy, He would open the opportunities to fulfil that prophecy in our lives.  It's easy though to sit back and not do anything about this.  By this i mean that, usually when God gives us a word of knowledge, it has usually been preceeded by a vision or desire which is in line with the word.  This has been my experience anyway.

The easy option at this point is to sit back and look at our circumstances, and say "it's just not possible" or "I have too many commitments for me to make a change in my life".  Indeed I said that too.  We have bills, commitments, responsibilities in Melbourne, and frankly the trip to Colombo was just not feasible at this point in time.  There was also a challenge for us to get out of a comfort zone.  The weather, the traffic, the dust... it doesn't exactly paint an inviting picture.  As I write this, the electricity has just gone off, and no ETA on when it will be restored.  So no fans either :)

So what brings us here?  Other than the desire to see others blessed through us, our faith in God compelled us to put our trust in Him.  We have heard many-a-time over the last couple of weeks sentences beginning with "but what about...", "but what if..."  Let me be honest, it almost made us change our minds.  But we pressed on, knowing that God wanted us here.

God reminded me of that beautiful psalm, where, in chapter 23 David begins with.. "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall lack for nothing".  The key point being "the Lord IS my shepherd".  If we are not following the Shepherd (and His will and plans), the we cannot expect to lack for nothing!

"He lets me rest in green meadows, He leads me beside peaceful streams" - It's important to recognise that the Shepherd here allows us rest, and also leads us beside peaceful streams.  It's not of our own choosing.

"He renews my strength.  He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to His name" - Wow.  If we are centred and focussed on following the Shepherd, we need not worry about burn-out, of our physical needs, and we can be certain that everything we do will bring Glory to God!  Isn't that awesome??

"Even when I walk through the dark valley of death, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me..."  - No doubt there will be trials and testings in our lives, however we can rest assured knowing that our Shepherd has gone before us and knows the way out!  He is always there close beside us ready to pick us up and guide us before we even ask!

Verse 5, "You prepare a feast before me in the presence of my enemies, you welcome me as a guest, anointing my head with oil.  My cup OVERFLOWS with blessings" - our obedience and allegiance to our Shepherd will also have it's rewards.  Rewards which we cannot measure  - as it's says, it will OVERFLOW.  A feast in the presence of our enemies.. I personally think that God will do this so that we can show His love and blessings to our enemies!  Hence, when we do this, our cups will overflow!

"Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever." - I dont know about you, but if I have God's goodness and love pursuing me for the rest of my life, then what else do I need in this world??  Like David, I too want to dwell in His presence forever.

This is where it's at my friends.  When God calls, we have to know that He has already gone ahead and prepared the way.  There is no "rushing ahead" of God.  There can't be, b'coz in Psalm 139 David tells us that even before we were formed our steps were ordained!!  So how can we say then that God's timing has to be right?  We can't fortell and forsee the timing of God, we can only keep our eyes fixed on Him, our Shepherd, and walk into the days that He ordained.

Before I was born, he knew I'd be sitting here typing this blog, without electricity and a fan, in Sri Lanka.  If you'd asked me 2 months ago, I would've laughed as in my vision, us being here was very unlikely.  Such is God, HE is BIG, He knows everything about You, indeed he has planned Everything good for your life, but we just have to make Him our Shepherd and follow him with our whole heart, mind, soul, strenght, and surely goodness and mercy WILL follow you - and you will begin to live out your destiny and a life that brings Glory to Him.  What's stopping you today?

Colombo.. the new Jo-berg?

Submitted by Anonymous on Tue, 2005-05-31 15:46.
Colombo seems to be becoming the new South Africa.  The rate of crime has increased dramatically since the Tsunami.  The lack of work, and the raft of armed deserters have meant that people will do anything for survival.

Car-jackings in and around colombo have increased, with a staggering 250 odd cars forcefully taken from their owners in the last 3 months, some even in broad daylight on busy roads!

Domestic burglaries have also increased, with thieves becoming more brazen in their attempts to steal.  All this does scare one, especially when you're used to the relative security of Australia - however, we realise that being in the will of God will always bring you protection - Psalm 91.  It is sad to see a place of such beauty and serenity ripped apart by poverty, greed and bitter prejudice.  Healing can only come from God.  Love is the key, not religion.  Please pray for a change of thinking and above all, a change of heart towards one another.

It's all started to take shape..

This morning the daughter of an old family friend rang mum to catchup. They live in Galle and were quite badly affected by the tsunami. However, they are holding onto their faith and now have put aside their losses in order to help the poorer and others affected around them. She was telling mum that her husband, about 2 months ago, had prayed asking God to give him the avenue to open an IT training centre in Galle to start doing something with the young people. Mum couldn't believe her ears, and this morning when she told Dhami, she couldn't believe it either!!! God is so good, as now I have someone trustworthy to look after things in that part of SL. I'm planning to go down there early next week to meet him.

New Blog..

As I didn't want to mix the personal side of this trip with all the rehab/company work we have, I have setup another blog for the "Business" side of things.

It's going to be a big task, running business both here and in Melbourne, as well as ministry etc, but I'm sure God has it all worked out! I'm excited!! I'd rather do all this while I'm young anyway :)

Green Green Grass of home..

Submitted by Anonymous on Tue, 2005-05-31 11:46.
Well we finally made it.  The last week in Melbourne was hectic, I was trying to get things finalised at work, and we had some visiting family too.

The plane trip was good, with Jordan and Rhyan both being extremely well behaved - definate answer to prayer there!  jordan had a ball watching his favourite dvd's on my XDA - thanks to PocketDVD studio.  For me, the flight seemed a bit long and having to get on and off a plane with 2 kids and hand luggage is starting to wear me down!!  I hear they are starting direct flights soon, which will be most welcome over here!!

Generally the trip was pretty uneventful, until we landed here that is.  Colombo airport is always full of surprises - and we were treated to a couple this time too.  They have built a new immigration wing, and it looks great.  That's until you have to queue up.. at which point you don't know where you're supposed to be??! as their is one tiny sign for about 8 counters.. and even though it says foreign passports only, everyone (including locals) queue up there?!!  So anyway.. we got past immigration and picked up a trolley and headed off to baggage claim, following the signs.. we got to the signs which led to an escalator?!? and the "stair" type escalators, not the flat ones you see at the glen!  So we had to put the trolley back and then head downstairs to baggage claim and find another trolley.

On the way out, I was pushing the trolley with the 5 bags on it and Jordy was sleepy so Shaz had to carry both him and Rhyan.  As I walked out of the doors into the arrival lounge I saw my mother and her face changed.  No it wasn't one of delight.. I turned around and saw Shaz on the floor with Rhyan and Jordan.  She had Rhyan in the baby pouch thing and her leg had buckled while walking and she had fallen.  Rhyan's head had hit the floor, but he didn't make a sound!!  Sharini was ok too, no pain in her leg.  We were too tired to worry about anything at this point, so kept going.  In hindsight, we believe that God really protected Rhyan at that point.  Yet another testimony for this trip, and what we have been called to do here.  No doubt there will be hinderances and roadblocks, but along with our prophecy, we hold fast to the scripture that was attached from Isaiah 45, verse 2: "I will go before you and make the crooked places straight; I will break in pieces the gates of bronze and cut the bars of iron"

Everyone has settled in well.  The kids and us are handling the weather very well, and of course we can't complain about the food ;-)

Please keep us in your prayers as we press on.  Will be posting regular updates.
