Planned menu attempt: Day 2

Submitted by susan on Mon, 2006-01-23 10:46.

Hah. Like I could stick to plan.  Right!

But I was close :-)  It's practically what I planned.

Grilled sun-dried tomato chicken with rice and snow pea shoots (Plan)  was meant to be a piece of grilled chicken, stir-fried shoots on the side and a rice timbale (maybe - or instead, a mound of rice with something colourful mixed through).

But, it just looked wrong.  Plan B: sliced chicken breast on rice with snowpea shoots stir fried with garlic sauce.

Video: Iterative Kway Teow

Submitted by susan on Sun, 2006-01-22 21:17.

It's been a long wait. Today's episode is on Kway Teow - called "iterative" cos as you can see, it needs heaps of development still *grin*

Things to do next time:

- use bean paste

- taste before turning off the fire!

- more oil for that authentic hot-fried texture and aroma

- cook it for longer so that the flavour permeates properly

Thinking about CNY

Wow, Chinese New Year is so close!

I stumbled across this while researching CNY stuff on Kuali and just had to add it to my blog.  Sad to hear that these sweets are disappearing - I have at least two firm favourites on that list!

Another 40 + degree day and out of season decisions

Submitted by susan on Sun, 2006-01-22 05:32.
Hmm... 41 deg. C currently, 28 tomorrow, then 27 and 33 to get us to Wednesday.

For awhile now I've been battling a baffling lack of motivation to cook.  Don't know why though :-(

The hot weather also means that this is not a particularly great time to find the road home, so to speak, but then this foodie obsession has never participated in the logical processes that I try to follow in other areas *grin*

So this is why I'm currently sitting in air-conditioning (a lovely 23-25 deg C?)  contemplating what to make for the next 4 dinners or so.

New Malaysian eatery

Submitted by susan on Thu, 2006-01-05 09:36.

Went out with Mum and Dad for dinner tonight as Mum noticed a new place opening next to her regular Asian grocery store in Wantirna.

The little brother of another eatery from Box Hill, in fact.  Another little factoid - owned by a man who happens to play mahjong with a friend of Mum and Dad's.

So enough of the non-food reporting.. we thought we'd try it out because it opened on Tuesday.

Oops...didn't make a booking - they take bookings?

But Dad looked SO disappointed that they relented and suggested to wait outside for 10 minutes while they saw if they could find 4 seats.

Haha...made another one!

This time it's the fabulous Sarah.  I'm also leaning towards Melbournians at the moment but will probably move on to Sydneysiders in a minute as am running out of names :-(

Check it out - this is going to be a favourite destination.. Sarah cooks, Sarah eats & Sarah rocks!

43 deg and a giant sorbet

Submitted by susan on Sun, 2006-01-01 14:03.

It was so hot that my skin stung the instant it got into the sun.  Like acid!

I can tell you I didn't give it a chance to burn - it was already too painful being in the sun. Found out later that yesterday qualified December as the hottest month on Melbourne records since the 1880s.  Phew..no wonder.

Anyway, we were picking up end-of-day bread from the generous Brumby's bakery in Centre Road, Bentleigh.  Across the road and a few shops down, was The Coffee Stop which looks like any of the million mum & dad milkbars across the nation.   Hardly your slick Gelatavita or Trampoline.

These news aggregators are so handy

Yeh..check out this list of Asian female food bloggers the next time you need inspiration gold..

It's a big job but I'll be looking through all of them and working out which ones to add to the blogroll.  Mainly a focus on Aussies of course, but I must confess that the south east asian blogs will likely be over-represented!

Arrrgh...annoying tech blip

The BlogRoundUp thing doesn't work at the mo', so I've changed the link to the aggregator view, and also added a menu item ("BlogRoll") so you can see exactly where the news items come from.

That's the temporary patch anyway.  Check it out!
