Chocolate cake experiment

Before I start I should warn the more sensitive among you that there the following contains moderate violence.

Well.. perhaps I should qualify that the violence in this case was perpetrated on two innocent blocks of Lindt dark chocolate. (The foodies among us can now flinch hehe..)

The story is that Eugene's birthday was coming up and for his special birthday meal request, he asked for curry and that special vegan ultra-orange cake which I discovered in that American tome...the Joy of Cooking. (I should add that if you want to dish up a dessert, American cookbooks are a very good place to start)

Pho Friday

My first blog on an awesome cuisine - the amazing, the unique, the mighty, the one..the only.. Vietnamese! In fact, it's so good that you may not be a foodie if you don't know about it. Outrageous claim, I know. Even arrogant. But hadn't you better find out why I'm making it? Anyway, a good place to start (if you're acquainted with Asian food) is with pho, which is what I had for dinner tonight. Mmmmm- stalks of floppy basil balanced on a 'bean shoot mountain' ..brim-ful bowl of slippery white noodles and mystery meat products plus coriander and rings of spring onion. The secret of course, is in the broth. Simmered with meat, bones and spices, it comes in the chicken or beef versions. Beef pho broth includes coriander, cinnamon, star anise etc.

CFA Library Fascinating book from the CFA library, everybody. What has this got to do with matters foodie, you ask? That's a very good question dear reader..and I leave it to you to document the likely reasoning!

[img_assist|fid=115|thumb=0|alt=The Witness Box] Here it is, foodie-ites.. I'm in 'court' this morning learning about giving evidence.. some time today I'll be in *that* box (Yikes!) Here's a picture of an authorised officer 'being cross examined' for an alledged offence against the dairy act.. a hard job but someone's got to do it! (*brave smile*) It's a sacrifice we are willing to make for the good of all foodies..haha..

Trivial pursuit!

Trivia, anyone? Well, I did pursue..and little pie slices I savoured not this night..except one! Once again a call to foodies - who can tell me which country's dictator once ruled.. "To eat buckwheat noodles, you must slow down"? This is indeed a test of the true foodie.. post your answer stating your foodie reasoning - or stay tuned O foodie-*not* one!

mobile phone trick

Ok, the point is, someone at work sent a hint around yesterday that you can open your car from a distance using a mobile phone. That is, if (say) your better half has locked herself out of the car, and you have a spare electronic key thingy, all she has to do is hold her mobile phone to the car while you click your key into the phone. Now, very interesting, but...TRUE...or FALSE? Also, I'd like an explanation from someone as to why it should or shouldn't work. I'll leave it to the curious to try the obvious experiment and report the results. Suffice to say we here were curious enough to do it

Have you ever wondered...?

Well, it's only the first day of my blog and already I've an interesting foodie question.. I was presenting a talk to a group of Japanese dairy industry delegates today and had the chance to ask the interpreter about miso paste. Some of you may know that miso is supposedly very healthy due to being fermented (beneficial bugs as well as the digested soy protein!) My question is/was - if the miso paste is shelf stable, does this mean that it's been cooked ie. is no longer active? This would obviously lessen its health value..

The answer appears to be that miso is generally shelf stable ie. apparently probably not heat treated even if sold on-shelf - but not definite - so if anyone out there knows THE TRUTH... well, hit the comment button :-)
