Stir Fries for dinner
Submitted by Anonymous on Fri, 2006-07-14 15:04.
Stir-fries are perhaps the easiest dish to make most times, especially during a work week. They are also something most of us would have grown up with. You can have whatever you want in a stir-fry and a combination of prawns, chinese broccoli (gai lan) and mushroms with garlic and oyster sauce is tonight's winner.
Pea and ham soup
Submitted by Anonymous on Thu, 2006-06-29 03:34.
Alfred's Kitchen in Guildford was where I tried pea and ham soup for the first time and since then we have always tried to go to Alfie's once a month for that soup (as well as burgers sometimes).
Now that it's winter here, the craving for substantial soups has started. So I made a batch and luckily the recipe turned out this time. Not as good as Alfie's but close enough.

Cakes should be boxed and carried carefully
Submitted by Anonymous on Tue, 2006-04-18 12:34. I had a lovely piece of Death by Chocolate from work that is now a lump of chocolatey mess.
Because I forgot about it and chucked it in the backpack with the rest of the work stuff. Oops.
It's been a little hard to write about food lately but there are more pictures on the flickr site and I guess more entries will follow soonish.

Sydney Food Tour - Wagamama Positive Eating
Submitted by Anonymous on Thu, 2006-03-30 06:36.This post has been a long time coming, but with work and the disinterest in writing lately I've been putting it off until now.
I first heard about Wagamama when I was still working in Subiaco and saw the ads and such when I had to catch the train. The chef at my work had been to the London one before and the reviews I've had had from a few people were that it was pretty good, hence I was quite keen on trying it when it opened. However since the Perth Wagamama wasn't opened yet when we left for Sydney we figured it's a good excuse to at least lunch there when we came across the cosy branch in the Galeries Victoria.

Their duck gyoza with hoisin sauce is a must-try mostly because it is not your typical gyoza. The sauce is a hit and miss though, it complements the gyoza perfectly if the gyoza is cooked just right, but if they are a little overcooked the entire dish becomes too salty (as we later discovered when we were at the Perth branch).

The negima yakitori makes another good start to the meal too if duck is not your starter of choice: skewers of succulent thigh fillets chargrilled with spring onions and coated with yakitori sauce. The chicken katsu curry is another recommended dish on the menu. Tender chicken deep-fried just right and served with a generous helping of steamed rice, salad and curry makes the perfect main course if you are a Japanese curry fan.

The Wagamama Ramen is reasonably priced for a decent sized bowl, with assorted ingredients in a generous serving of soup stock; and if you like the Vietnamese beef phô, do try their chilli ramen with beef. We finished with their dark chocolate mousse with wasabi ganache, which would have been perfect except the peppermint sauce overwhelmed everything on the dish.

A meal like the one we had only cost us $64 including drinks (2 iced teas and a sparkling water) so it is reasonable price-wise. The establishment also has communal seating so if new friendships can be made by striking up conversations with random strangers while waiting for your food. I have only been to the branches at GV and Subiaco, and personally the GV one is much better ;)
Wagamama Galeries Victoria is located at Level 1, George Street, Sydney NSW.

Pork Fillets with honey & ginger
Submitted by Anonymous on Thu, 2006-03-23 13:58. I couldn't resist buying Kylie Kwong's Simple Chinese Cookingwhen I went past Dymock's and saw it was on sale. Since then a couple of recipes have been tried and the favourite so far was the stir-fried chicken fillets with honey & ginger. I had forgotten to take pictures of said dish when I made it but here's one of a similar dish anyways.
The book is pretty good in terms of contents regarding Chinese cookery - simple explanations of what is what etc; and I like how she has a sort of "menu planner" at the end of the book. The pork fillet dish was quite simple to make, simply combine the meat with the marinade ingredients, leave overnight and voila! You just simply cook it when you want to eat it and it's done.
Easy peasy.
This book makes up for not being able to go to her event.

Stir-Fried Pork Fillets with Honey & Ginger
600g pork fillets, cut into 5mm slices
¼ cup vegetable oil
2 spring onions, trimmed & cut into 10cm lengths
1 tbsp. malt vinegar
1 tbsp. light soy sauce
1 tbsp. water
2 limes, halved
Marinade:
2 tbsp. honey
2 tbsp. light soy sauce
2. tbsp. shao xing wine (or dry sherry)
2 tbsp. finely diced ginger
1 tbsp. oyster sauce
2 tsp dark soy sauce
2 tsp 5-spice powder
½ tsp sesame oil
Combine the pork with the marinade ingredients in a bowl, cover and leave to marinade in the fridge for at least 30 minutes (or overnight for best results).
Heat 2 tbsp of the oil in a hot wok, add half the meat and stir-fry 30 seconds before removing from work and set aside. Heat the remaining oil in the wok and then stir-fry the rest of the meat for another 30 seconds before adding the reserved meat with the rest of the ingredients. Stir-fry until the pork is just cooked through.
Arrange the meat on a platter and serve with lime halves. I had mine with steamed rice.

No place like home
Submitted by Anonymous on Sun, 2006-02-26 23:39. Holidays were great but it does feel awesome to be back home again. Though it doesn't really feel that great being back in the heat (expected temperature today 37°C!).
Much food was had so pictures will be uploaded. Eventually.
